The second season of the brand new Law & Order spin-off, Organized Crime, is throwing Elliot Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni) into deeper water than ever. As the detective continues his undercover mission as ex-con ‘Eddie Ashes’, showrunner Ilene Chaiken has warned the case could have some dire consequences for his family life in the coming episodes on NBC.

Stabler’s undercover mission could be a disaster for his family life, including the already precarious relationship with his son Elliot ‘Eli’ Stabler Jr (Nicky Torchia).

Organized Crime’s executive producer and showrunner Ilene Chaiken opened up about the follow-up season in a recent interview with TVLine.

Season two opens with Stabler undercover posing as ex-con Eddie Ashes in order to take down an organized crime ring.

Plus, the detective is still wracking his brains over Olivia Benson’s (Mariska Hargitay) mysterious letter from last season.

While the contents of the correspondence will be revealed soon, Chaiken has warned Stabler’s latest case could hit even closer to home.

Still reeling from the death of his wife Kathy (Isabel Gillies) in SVU earlier this year, Stabler has been neglecting his parenting duties.

As the new Law & Order spin-off continues, his children, particularly teenage son Eli, will be starting to feel his absence as his obsession with his undercover mission grows.

Chaiken explained: “Stabler is a somewhat absent father sincerely doing his best to be there for all of his kids, but especially his teenage son who just lost his mother.”

“This will present problems and issues that will develop [over the course of the season’s first eight episodes].”

As season two will comprise 24 episodes compared to the first season’s eight, viewers could see a dramatic midseason cliffhanger before Organized Crime takes its Christmas break.

Stabler’s storyline could be building to a tragic crescendo, as the showrunner has teased big things to come for Eli later in the season.

She continued: “And without getting too spoilery, Eli will bear the brunt.”

The showrunner’s aversion to spoilers could hint there’s a shocking twist coming later in the season.

Could Eli get himself injured or even killed by getting himself tangled up in his father’s undercover work?

Alternatively, Chaiken could simply be teasing a heated exchange or falling out between the two Stablers coming up in a few episodes.

Whatever happens, her comments have certainly set off alarm bells and viewers will be keeping a close eye on Eli going forward.

Before then, the showrunner confirmed there’ll be even more family drama as Stabler’s mother Bernie (Ellen Burstyn) will be returning this season.

Teasing her OC appearance, Chaiken teased: “She’s having some issues.

“Her son is called on to help with those issues, which is like piling on for Stabler. It’s like, how much can he take on?”

With an Oscar-winning actress and Stabler’s most dangerous case yet, season two of Organized Crime is shaping up to be a must-watch for Law & Order fans.

Law & Order: Organized Crime season 2 continues Thursdays on NBC.
