Miriam Margolyes joined the Loose Women panel today to discuss her new BBC series Miriam Margoyles: Almost Australian. The Harry Potter actress opened up to Kaye Adams, Stacy Solomon, Jane Moore and Judi Love about her Australian adventure before revealing she’s found lockdown incredibly tough after being separated from her partner, Heather Sutherland.

Miriam revealed she had been with her partner for 52 years and the Loose Women were intrigued for her opinion on what makes a lasting, happy relationship.

The actress explained living separately helps as Heather resides in Amsterdam.

Miriam clarified she had spent the coronavirus lockdown completely on her own without anyone else living with her temporarily or otherwise.

“How have you found lockdown then Miriam?” Kaye asked.

“Oh it’s awful, it’s absolutely ghastly,” she replied. “And I’m not going to be brave about it.

“I think it’s an absolute… I’ve got to be careful with my language on your programme but it’s not to my taste.”

Stacey asked: “Are you on your own Miriam or do you have anyone with you?”

“I’m on my own. Do you think anybody would come here and live with me?” Miriam answered. “Certainly not.”

“That must be really difficult, to be away from your partner during a pandemic and to not have anybody especially when we were in strict lockdown and we weren’t allowed to leave the house,” Stacey remarked.

Miriam said: “My friend Denise comes to help me and my friend Marina comes to help me, and I have a gardener, Marcos, and I can wave at him from the window.”

“But actually, in my house, I don’t have anybody. It’s horrible,” she continued.

“I’m lonely, and depressed and anxious and I don’t know what we’re going to do because we’re never going to get out of this.”

“I think what you’re saying will resonate with a lot of people Miriam,” Jane commented.

Elsewhere in the interview, Kaye quizzed Miriam on what it was like to come out as gay when she was 27-years-old.

“So you came out when you were 27 and that’s 50 years [or so] ago that must be so different from today. What was that like?” Kaye asked.

“Well I didn’t know you were supposed to it never occurred to me that loving somebody and going to bed with them was not on just because they were the same sex as you,” she replied.

“I’ve never had a problem with it and I know some people do.

“I feel terribly sorry that they do and I hope things are better and changed.”

“But we’ve all got to have a bit of friction haven’t we? Sex is friction,” Miriam added.
