According to court papers and testimony in the US, he smashed a bottle over pub-goer Peter Marosi’s forehead, leaving him needing more than a dozen stitches.
Strictly contestant Bell, then 26, was said to have assaulted truck firm boss Peter in the Sutra Lounge bar in Costa Messa, California, in February 2005.
Witnesses claimed the pair exchanged words before Bell, now a pundit on the BBC’s NFL Show, flew into a rage.
Carla Mantecon, now 36, told The Sun On Sunday: “I was between them. I had blood all over me. Peter had to have a few facial surgeries and he was left with a scar.”
In a signed “adviser and waiver of rights for a felony guilty plea”, filed at court in 2007, Bell stated: “I did wilfully and unlawfully commit an assault upon Peter Marosi with a deadly instrument.”
He was sentenced to probation and 300 hours of community service.
Peter sued Bell and was understood to have been paid a significant amount in an out-of-court settlement.
Last night a spokesman for Bell claimed he acted in self-defence, but declined to comment further. The BBC declined to comment.
