Olivia Colman Earned Her Second Oscar Nomination for The Father—Here’s Where to Stream It
Since premiering at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, Florian Zeller’s The Father has gone on to earn widespread critical acclaim and six Academy Award nominations.
The drama, which is adapted from the 2012 French play Le Père, follows an elderly man, played by Anthony Hopkins, who struggles with leaning on his daughter, Olivia Colman, as he begins to develop dementia. Both Hopkins and Colman earned Oscar nods for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively. Other nominations include Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Production Design.
Zeller, who also wrote the award-winning Le Père, previously talked to Deadline about the differences in writing for the stage versus the screen.
“I realized that there was something cathartic about it, just to give or to share your own story and to realize that you are not just by yourself and just alone,” he told the outlet. “I wanted to make that film because I had the conviction that it could be something different. I profoundly thought that something could be done, only thanks to the cinema, something that was not possible on stage. And it was to experience subjectively what it means to lose your bearings.”
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic pushed The Father‘s original slated release date from December 18, 2020, to February 26, 2021, as reported by Variety.
