Regé Jean-Page Reveals Why He’s Leaving ‘Bridgerton’ After Just One Season

It’s definitely a sad time for Bridgerton fans.

On Apr. 2, it was announced that the series’ breakout star Regé-Jean Page would not be returning for its second season. Fans were understandably heartbroken by this news, considering Page, who’s a Bridgerton fan-favorite, was ending his run on the show after just one season.

But it turns out that the actor’s short-lived stint on the Netflix series was always the plan as he recently explained the reason behind his brief tenure during an interview with Variety.

‘Bridgerton’ announced Regé-Jean Page’s exit on Instagram

Bridgerton season 2 will be missing a familiar face, and fans are not happy about this one bit.

In an unexpected post shared to the Netflix series’ Instagram, Lady Whistledown announced that Page, who played the ever-so-charming Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings, will not be returning for the show’s sophomore season.

“While all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings,” the “letter” read. “We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family.”

Though Page will not be part of the upcoming season, Whistledown assured fans that his love interest Daphne Bridgerton, played by Phoebe Dynevor, will return for the second installment of the series.

“Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer,” the notice added, “more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear.”

Regé-Jean Page says his run on the show was supposed to be short-lived

The same day Instagram announced his departure from the show, Variety published an interview with Page during which he explained the reason behind his brief stint on Bridgerton.

According to the actor, he will not be returning for the show’s second season because he only signed on to do the first.

“It’s a one-season arc. It’s going to have a beginning, middle, end—give us a year,” Page explained to the publication. “[I thought] ‘That’s interesting,’ because then it felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on.”

Although fans are sad to see him go, Page pointed out that viewers can take comfort in knowing that a happy ending is coming.

“One of the things that is different about this [romance] genre is that the audience knows the arc completes,” he said. “They come in knowing that, so you can tie people in emotional knots because they have that reassurance that we’re going to come out and we’re going to have the marriage and the baby.”

Though Bridgerton is continuing without him, Page is excited for what’s to come in the show and his career as he currently has a few projects in the works.

“I have nothing but excitement for Bridgerton continuing to steam train off and conquer the globe,” he told the outlet. “But there is also value in completing these arcs and sticking the landing.”

Despite his departure, Regé-Jean Page will always cherish his time as Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings

Although his time as the Duke of Hastings has come to an end, Page will forever cherish his time on the show.

In a recent Instagram post, the actor shared photos of himself on horseback while in character as Simon. He also shared a touching caption, writing nothing but glowing things about his character and the show that made him a household name.

“The ride of a life time. It’s been an absolute pleasure and a privilege to be your Duke,” Page wrote. “Joining this family—not just on screen, but off screen too. Our incredibly creative and generous cast, crew, outstanding fans—it’s all been beyond anything I could have imagined. The love is real and will just keep growing.”
