Simon Cowell pounding 10,000 steps a day in punishing fitness regime after breaking his back
SIMON Cowell has been pounding out 10,000 steps a day in a punishing fitness regime to help his recovery from a broken back.
The music mogul, 61, was hospitalised in August after falling off an electric bike.
However, Simon has committed to a gruelling exercise regime that has helped him recover enough to enjoy a jet ski ride with partner Lauren Silverman, 43, and son Eric, 6, during his annual Christmas holiday in Barbados this week.
Close friend and former girlfriend Sinitta exclusively told The Sun: “He’s come back from a really scary position and is feeling blessed because the outcome could have been so different.
“Simon has worked hard at his recovery and told me he’s walking 10,000 steps a day that’s around five miles – way more than he was before the accident.
“He’s got one of those watches that measures every step
“He’s still having a lot of physiotherapy, seeing great doctors and doing non weight bearing pool work especially for spinal injuries,
“Simon has really looked after himself
“Lauren and his team have taken great care of him and he’s being sensible.”
Singer Sinitta is jetting out to Barbados at the weekend to spend Christmas and New Year with Simon and his friends as long as she passes strict Covid tests and quarantine regulations.
She added:”I can’t wait to see him.
“He said he’s really cut back on the cigarettes. I don’t know if he’s given up entirely but he’s smoking a lot less.”
In August, Cowell was rushed to hospital to undergo six hours of surgery after falling off an electric bike and breaking his back in LA.
He was forced to cancel all his planned TV work for the rest of the year but now hopes to return to film the new series of BGT in January.
Sinitta said: "Taking time off from his TV commitments has helped him 100 per cent to put his health first.
“If anything had gone wrong with his recovery or there were any setbacks it would have been ridiculous and devastating for Simon and his family.
“He’s very successful already so if you have a young child and family putting your health at risk for a tv show is not worth it. There is nothing to compare.
“Simon puts Lauren and Eric first.”
Back in September Sinitta revealed that Simon had stopped his vegan diet and started eating protein to build his weight back up.
She continued: “I think he’s found a better way of living. He’s made a lot of big decisions and I think it has given him time to think instead of rushing from show to show.
“When do you ever get so much time to think and reflect how you live and do things especially for someone like Simon who has been going non-stop for the last 15 years really.
“Simon’s very disciplined once he puts his mind to things.
“Having baby Eric is the biggest wake up call to things because you want to be around for a long time and be a healthy and able dad.
“He wants to watch his son grow up and have his own family so he’s taking fewer risks to make sure that happens.”
Sinitta hasn’t spoken to Simon about reports claiming he is considering legal action against the makers of the electric bike Swindon Powertrain.
“That’s between Simon and his legal team," she said.
As well as Simon and Lauren, Sinitta will be meeting up with pals – former M People singer Heather Small and ex-Eastenders actor Paul Medford.
On New Year’s Eve she will be performing at a private party.
She said: “Seeing Simon enjoying himself with his family again is fantastic.
“Simon’s a very lucky boy.”
