The funniest tweets about the fly in Pence’s hair during the VP debate

No matter who you are, there’s one thing pretty much everyone faces: bugs. Pests will worm their way into any building they can find, and the 2020 vice presidential debate was no exception. A fly landed in Vice President Mike Pence’s hair, and the internet had a lot to say about the uninvited guest.

From Succession fan accounts to former Vice President Joe Biden himself, it seems like everyone had something to say about the fly in Pence’s hair during the debate. And while it might be a little frustrating that viewers seem to be more interested in making fly jokes than talking about the issues the vice presidential candidates discussed, it’s pretty understandable. During the pandemic and in such a pivotal election year, people are taking joy where they can get it — even if that’s from a buzzing insect on a debate stage.

Here are some of the funniest tweets about the fly that landed in Mike Pence’s hair during the vice presidential debate on Oct. 7, 2020.

The vice presidential debate quite literally had a 'fly on the wall'

You’ve probably heard the old saying about wanting to be a “fly on the wall” and overhear someone else’s private conversation. Well, naturally, Twitter couldn’t resist using the saying to make a joke about the fly that landed in Vice President Mike Pence’s hair during the Oct. 7, 2020, vice presidential debate. “Oh, to be a fly on the wall in that debate hall…,” tweeted MSNBC producer Kyle Griffin.

Other Twitter users had fun Photoshopping more flies onto Pence’s face because, well, why not? And the inevitable question came up: “Who’s gonna play the fly on snl,” wondered one tweeter. Some Twitter users managed to combine Pence’s apparent eye issues with the fly situation, too. “Yes your Darkness the debate went as planned. My eye was RED and the fly landed right on time,” tweeted comedian Julio Torres.

Novelist Sarah Hogle also brought back the iconic Leonardo DiCaprio meme, tweeting, “when we saw the fly and stopped listening to anything he said.” She’s not wrong — as funny as the fly jokes are, it’s also a distraction from the decidedly unfunny issues that came up at the debate, including the many American deaths from the coronavirus pandemic.

There's already a 'Pence's Fly' parody Twitter account

The lifespan of jokes about the fly at the 2020 vice presidential debate is sure to be a short one, but that hasn’t stopped viewers from milking them for all they’re worth. Within minutes of the fly’s on screen debut, the Twitter account @MichaelsFly cropped up, quickly amassing thousands of followers.

“I’m living free on Mike Pence’s head and I’m loving it,” the parody account tweeted. The account also quote-tweeted a message from former Vice President Joe Biden’s Twitter account, as the presidential candidate was quick to share his own joke about the fly situation. “Pitch in $5 to help this campaign fly,” Biden tweeted, along with a link to the ActBlue Biden-Harris donation page and a photo of Biden holding a fly swatter. “Joe…. please spare me!,” the parody account tweeted. Twitter users are nothing if not prompt with their jokes!

Biden also tweeted a voter registration link to IWillVote.com — but it was set up to redirect from FlyWillVote.com. Clever, clever!

During a debate in which fans grew ever-frustrated with Pence’s interrupting and going over the time limit, the fly brought viewers a little bit of joy and laughter. And that’s not such a bad thing.
