Appearing on BBC’s Strictly – It Takes Two, former Strictly Come Dancing professional Kevin Clifton discussed the week one show. While talking about McFly star Tom, who has, unfortunately, had to pull out of this week’s show alongside partner Amy Dowden due to being diagnosed with COVID-19, the choreographer analysed a moment in the performance that Tom slipped up on, describing the incidents the singer “showing off”.

Presenter Rylan Clark-Neal addressed the shock Covid news, announcing: “Let’s talk about Tom and Amy, as you know, they’re not going to be performing this weekend, which is so gutting.

“But fingers crossed for the following week.” He added: “But let’s talk about that Cha Cha – he did great.”

“They had to open the show, which is always a big thing to do,” Kevin, 38, replied.

The pair watched a clip of Tom keenly performing on the dance floor during his routine, one moment of which saw him dancing solo.

“I think he got excited,” Kevin commented. “He got really excited at this moment, he was looking over at the judges like ‘Right, now’s my moment on my own, I’m going to show them’.

“So he went into these spins and I think what happened – listen I’m no spinner myself – but Tom went for those spins and I love the energy.

“He perhaps just threw a bit much in the top half because he was getting excited about showing off to the judges.”

Kevin continued: “But like I’ve said about some of the others, that’s what we want.

“We want them to take a chance, we want them to get out there and give energy.

“Don’t hold back and play it safe – I want to see more of that.”

Tom’s opening dance received a largely positive response from the judges.

“Tom, it is definitely difficult to go first,” Shirley Bassey remarked.

“And you did yourself honour with some of the footwork that you did.”

She added: “If this is the standard that you’re setting then I hope that everybody else can follow that because that was really very good.”

“Oh, wow,” the 36-year-old responded as Amy clapped beside him.

Anton Du Beke commented: “All I can say is if touring isn’t enough why don’t you come along and do Strictly Come Dancing in the evenings – like you’ve got enough time on your hands.”

Week one of the competition saw Tom juggling dance training with touring with McFly.

On Sunday though, the band announced the musician would be pulling out of the show due to illness, and a later update confirmed he and Amy had tested positive for COVID-19.

Strictly – It Takes Two is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
