Walking dead theory: What do ‘A’ and ‘B’ stand for in season 9?

The unusual labelling has been used since series nine of AMC’s The Walking Dead. The labels seem to be linked to Jadis (played by Pollyanna McIntosh) and her helicopter. Fans are still waiting to find out what she means when she calls people ‘A’ and ‘B’.

Jadis, also known as Anne, is the leader of the Scavengers who relocates to the Alexandria Safe-Zone.

She finds main character Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) left for dead after he tried to blow up a bridge and kill a horde of walkers.

When she calls for the helicopter to come and rescue them both she is heard saying over the radio: “I have a ‘B’ not an ‘A’. .

“I never had an ‘A’. He’s hurt but he’s strong, can you help him?”

  • The Walking Dead season 10 theories: Magna death confirmed?

Fans have taken to Reddit to discuss what they believe ‘A’ and ‘B’ refer to.

JC1315 suggested ‘A’ stands for immune and ‘B’ for not immune, but creators of the show have already confirmed immunity does not exist.

Racing2F said: “I believe ‘A’ stands for someone who wants to go back and join the CRM, while a ‘B’ is someone who the CRM would need to keep prisoner.

“This explains why the pilot was angry, as more resources would need to be expended to keep Rick alive and locked up in a jail cell to recruit him into joining.”

“Anne knew that Rick would never want to stay, and would want to get back to his family and communities, so he would need to be kept prisoner.”

The CRM refers to a network of three communities of survivors first introduced in the eighth season.

DrunkenDave said: “Maybe Alpha’s are seen as useful commodities, but also people they want under their thumb or to get rid of if they might pose threat.

“They are unpredictable and can cause trouble. So they have a chance to fall in line or die.

“They also can provide useful info about their territory and how many people they have, etc.

“Beta’s follow. And a strong beta is exactly what CRM is looking for. Somebody who will follow and not ask questions.

“If Anne told them he was an A, they’d likely kill him, which she didn’t want and she knew he’d fight if he was interrogated. So she claimed he was a B and a strong person.

“Which is why, despite the resources they would have to give to save him and keep him alive, they still picked him up.”

  • Walking Dead: Do the Whisperers get defeated in The Walking Dead?

Angela Kang, show runner for the series, gave a clue when she spoke to Entertainment Weekly.

She said: “The A and B has something to do with the thing that she was involved in which was human trading, and it was a way to differentiate between classes of people.”

The fan theories could then make sense if Rick is seen to be a follower, rather than an unpredictable survivor.

Viewers will have to wait for the next episodes to find out if the meaning is ever revealed.

The Walking Dead will return to AMC and Fox on February 23
