Where was Homeland series 8 filmed? Filming locations for the season finale revealed

SPY thriller Homeland will return for its eighth and final season.

Over the years, the cast and crew have filmed in some of the most exotic and picturesque places in the world and season 8 is no exception… Let's take a deeper look at some of them.

The series is based on Israeli television show Prisoners of War so it's only fitting Homeland was filmed in Tel Aviv for it's first and second seasons.

Following her last visit to Isreal, Claire Danes told host Conan O'Brien that the city was the "most intense party town" she had ever been to.

Despite announcing that parts of the third season would be held in Isreal, filming was switched to Morocco due to concerns over the uncertain situation in Syria.

The Israeli production company that arranged the location shots reportedly lost tens of thousands of dollars on the cancellation.

A report from TVline revealed that Homeland season 8 will be set in Afghanistan and with no filming scheduled to take place there, it seems like Morocco will be the location used to portray as Afghanistan.

According to PursueNews, show developer Alex Gansa said the final season would likely “start fresh” with “a fairly big time jump.”

He also promised an emotional series adding: "Season 8 will be overseas somewhere.

"We get to play a story with larger national stakes in season 7 and we’ll go back to a smaller intelligence-based season in 8.

"We get to pull out all the stops this year and then get to the emotional heart of things in season 8."

New Mexico

PursueNews have also reported that New Mexico will be a filming location in series 8, although it is still unknown what will happen there.

Even with the show coming to an end, show director Lesli Linka told Indiewire in 2018 that the show will continue to surprise.

"One of the things that's been so amazing about being on the show is that we reinvent the show every year," she said.

"And what's great about that is it stays new and fresh and it keeps us all on our toes, and what's bad about that is it never gets any easier.

We're always going to a new city, hiring a new crew — kind of reinventing the wheel."

South Africa

Cape Town played host to Homeland's fourth season as the crew reshaped narrow streets and city buildings into Pakistani themed alleyways.

The end of season three found Carrie Mathison taking a job as a station chief in Istanbul as the show looked to involve the protagonist in more fieldwork.

Executive Producer Alexander Cary told news agency AAP: "We had to go somewhere where we could realistically and production wise shoot the story we wanted to shoot.

"So it was really about authenticity, sort of foreign authenticity.

For the show's fifth season, the hit drama relocated to the German capital after Carrie Mathison became estranged from the CIA to work for a private security firm in Berlin.

In doing so, it became the first American television series ever to shoot a full season entirely in Germany.

The city served as the location for Peter Quinn's hideout, on Revaler Strasse, where he was taken after he was shot.

Other notable spots throughout the fifth series include the Potsdamer Platz and the Monbijoupark.

New York City

The majority of filming for series six took place in New York with occasional scenes in Morocco.

The Intercontinental New York Barclay hotel is featured repeatedly throughout the sixth season and plays an important role in the series finale.

Carrie's office is also located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York where Carrie is working at a foundation whose efforts are to provide aid to Muslims living in the United States..
