19-year-old man arrested in connection with Denver shooting that left toddler in critical condition
Denver Police arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with a December South Federal Boulevard shooting in which two people were shot, including a child who remains in critical condition, Denver Police announced Thursday.
Guadalupe Jose Villanueva was taken into custody in El Paso, Texas, on Jan. 24, where he is currently being held, police said. Villanueva will be extradited back to Denver.
Villanueva is being held for investigation of first-degree attempted murder – extreme indifference, first-degree assault and second-degree attempted murder, Denver Police said.
The shooting happened on Dec. 28 at 2969 S. Federal Blvd.
Investigators believe Villanueva allegedly started shooting at a man who was taking a picture of his car in the Denver strip mall. The car was parked in a handicapped parking spot. Police believe the suspect walked out of one of the businesses in the strip mall and started firing at the man without warning.
The bullets struck the man taking the photographs as well as a little girl who was sitting in a nearby van with her family waiting to pick up dinner. The young child remains in critical condition but is expected to live, Denver Police said. The man taking the photographs was treated and released from the hospital.
