It is fewer than half the 77 recorded last Sunday and is below 50 for the first time since before lockdown.

The last time it was lower was on March 21, when there were 35 deaths — two days before the UK went into lockdown.

Mr Hancock said: “We are winning the battle against this horrible disease.”

There were 144,865 tests conducted or posted in the previous 24 hours, with 1,514 positive.

There have been 295,889 confirmed cases nationwide so far.

Doctors believe the true toll is higher, with some death certificates stating Covid-19 as a cause of death without testing.

It is thought to be at least 52,000.
