Shocking images show a pensioner’s horrific injuries after he was battered by a female drug addict who broke into his sheltered housing and stole his bank card.

Samantha McDonnell forced her way into the 87-year-old’s supported accommodation on Hasbury Road, Bartley Green in Birmingham on March 4 and let herself into the elderly man’s flat.

She demanded money and attacked him until he fell to the floor before cruelly unplugging his phone to stop him calling for help as she stole his bank card and escaped.

McDonnell, 37, beat him so hard, he was rushed to hospital with a bleed on the brain and a broken nose in the shocking attack last month.

Police also discovered that she had stolen from three people at the property in Hasbury Court including two pensioners and a support worker.

Horrific pictures show the man with two swollen eyes and blood all over his face and head.

McDonnell was arrested the next day at her flat in Bartley Green and was caught by DNA evidence that was left behind.

Officers seized the stolen items and clothes she was wearing at the time of the attack.

McDonnell was also filmed near the pensioner’s flats by one of the support workers shortly after the robbery and was picked out on an ID parade.

She admitted theft, robbery and burglary and was jailed for seven-and-a-half years at Birmingham Crown Court on April 28.

The pensioner has since been released from hospital but his life has been changed forever and he has moved house due to not feeling safe following the attack.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: ‘While McDonnell is a drug addict and her addiction likely drove her to commit the crimes she did, addiction can be no excuse for violence against a vulnerable, elderly person.

‘The pensioner was left with a broken nose and a bleed on the brain.

‘While he has since been released from hospital, his life has sadly been changed forever and he has had to move to a new home due to not feeling safe.

‘Our thoughts remain with the man she attacked as he continues to recover from the horrible ordeal that was inflicted on him.’
