Miracle baby born to a Russian woman who died the next day of Covid is at the centre of a tug-of-love as ‘secret partner’ and distant relative battle for custody

  • Divorcee Svetlana Sorochinskaya chose a work colleague to father her baby
  • They agreed he would play no further part in her or the child’s life
  • Tragically, Svetlana passed away the day after giving birth from Covid-19
  • Now, there is a tug-of-war over who will raise the orphaned baby

The authorities in Russia are to decide the fate of a tragic miracle baby born to a woman who died next day from Covid-19.

Divorcee Svetlana Sorochinskaya, 36, had desperately wanted a child and secretly chose a work colleague to father her baby on the understanding he would play no further part in her or the child’s life.

Inside a week of her death, the woman’s entire close family – her father, 64, and mother, 62 – also died of coronavirus, leaving the little boy an orphan.

Now, a man claiming to be the biological father has come forward, but in a tug-of-love so has a distant relative of the baby.

Both want to raise tragic Svetlana’s child.

The baby was born prematurely in St Petersburg in November by Caesarean when the woman was gravely ill on a lung ventilator.

At the time it was described as a ‘miracle’ birth.

The case came to light earlier but without full detail of her secret arrangement with a security guard at the dental practice where she worked to father her longed-for child.

The dental receptionist had not told doctors the father’s identity, and had not intended to declare a name on the birth certificate.

Now the ‘father’ has come forward and is ready to undergo a DNA test which he believes will confirm his paternity, reported Komsomolskaya Pravda.

He has told the authorities he is ready to raise the child, but the boy is now the subject of a tug-of-love with a distant relative of Svetlana’s also saying she wants to raise the boy.

Currently the baby – released this week from hospital – has been taken to an orphanage while the guardianship authorities and possibly a court decide his future.

A friend said: ‘Svetlana had been dreaming of having a child for a long time.’

An earlier marriage failed after she had a miscarriage.

‘She told me that she was expecting a baby,’ said the friend.

‘The child’s father, as far as I know, is a guard from her dentist’s clinic but she did not show off this man.’

She had decided to have a child without a relationship with the baby’s father.

Svetlana was aware of her father’s death and named her unborn child after him, Kirey.

‘The baby is healthy,’ said Alexander Popeiko, spokesman for the children’s ombudsman in St. Petersburg.

The boy had required treatment in hospital until this week.

He confirmed the boy had been placed in an orphanage where he will remain until his fate is decided.

The matter was likely to go to a judge to decide, he made clear.

‘Such things happen only in court,’ he said.

‘To date, there have been no meetings yet (with the alleged father).’

The baby is also the heir to his family’s property in St Petersburg.

The relative from Mordovia who is also seeking the baby, Larisa Kachkaeva, a cousin, has questions whether the man is the true father of the baby.

‘Svetlana had said that he was not the father of the child,’ she said.

‘We await the result of the DNA analysis and the court will decide.’

Reports said Svetlana and her parents had all succumbed rapidly to coronavirus.

She is believed to become infected when she visited her father in hospital where he had recovered from heart problems.

‘Svetlana did not have any chronic diseases,’ said a male friend.

‘Most likely, her body was weakened by pregnancy and the news of her father’s death.

‘She was very worried about this.’
