Notting Hill Carnival clean-up: Mammoth tidy-up starts after Notting Hill Carnival brought carnage to London streets

A HUGE clean-up operation is underway to clear more than 200 tons of rubbish after the most violent Notting Hill carnival in a generation.

Giant piles of waste are littered across gardens and mountains of debris left on roads and pavements.

Some 434 arrests were made, 43 cops were injured and six people stabbed during Europe's largest street party.

A team of street cleaners, refuse and waste managers and 30 vehicles started the mass clean up after the three-day carnival finished on Monday night.

More than 200 tons of waste is being tidied from the streets of west London.

It will be converted into green electricity and heat to create enough energy to power 60,000 hot showers.

Councillor Melvyn Caplan from Westminster City Council, said: "We are proud to support the Notting Hill Carnival, and provide such an efficient clean-up service to get the streets tidy after one of Europe's biggest street parties.

"Through the hard work and commitment of the council and Veolia's clean-up staff you wouldn't know that such a huge event had taken place.

"I know residents and visitors appreciate these efforts to get the neighbourhood back to normal."

Vincent Masseri, Veolia's senior contract manager, said: "The Notting Hill Carnival is such a fantastic event for the capital and I would like to thank everyone who was involved in ensuring the clean-up went smoothly.

‘"The recyclable materials collected by the Veolia Westminster team have been sent for processing and the remaining waste will be converted to green energy – generating approximately 97,200kWh of electricity."

The world famous event was marred by the worst violence at the event in 15 years.

A boy, 15, was left fighting for life after being slashed with a Zombie Killer knife.

He was rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery on his stomach.

He was among six people stabbed and is now in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, Lily Allen dramatically collapsed at the carnival after a drinking and smoking binge.

Zombie knives have been banned by the government as ministers crack down on the blades.

But while most revellers enjoyed the boozy party peacefully, pictures emerged of violence kicking off on the capital's streets.

Of the 245 arrested on Monday, 122 were for drug offences while a further 60 were taken in for possession of a knife.

Eleven revellers were arrested for assaulting police.

But for most the festival was a chance to let their hair down.
