Team Trump to Jeff Sessions: You’re no ally of ours

President Trump’s re-election campaign told Senate Republican candidate Jeff Sessions on Thursday to stop calling himself a Trump ally, saying “nothing could be further from the truth.”

“We only assume your campaign is doing this to confuse President Trump’s loyal supporters in Alabama into believing the president supports your candidacy in the upcoming primary run-off election. Nothing could be further from the truth,” Trump  campaign official Michael Glassner said in a letter to Sessions, a senator from Alabama before Trump named him attorney general.

Sessions was an early and loyal supporter of Trump but incurred his wrath when he recused himself from the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 White House campaign.

Trump forced him from his job as attorney general in November 2018 right after the midterm elections led to Democrats retaking the House.

Sessions has been trying to return to the Senate, and he and former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville finished neck and neck in early March in a Republican primary race and will face off in a runoff.

Trump has already endorsed Tuberville and has made clear he wants nothing to do with Sessions.

Team Trump apparently took issue with a direct mail campaign ad in which Sessions pledged his support for the president.

“The letter even makes the delusional assertion that you are ‘Trump’s #1 Supporter,’ ” Glassner wrote.

“President Trump and his campaign do not support your efforts to return to the U.S. Senate. We demand that you and your campaign immediately stop circulating mailers — or any other similar communication — that wrongly suggest otherwise,” he said.

Sessions last month responded to Trump’s endorsement of Tuberville, saying he remained loyal to the president’s agenda.

“I’m one of the architects of the Trump agenda — I’ve always supported it and always will. Nothing the President can do will deter me from supporting this agenda, because my principles, just like my faith, are fundamental to who I am and immovable,” Sessions tweeted.

Trump a day earlier endorsed the former coach in a tweet.

“Tommy Tuberville is running for the U.S. Senate from the Great State of Alabama. Tommy was a terrific head football coach at Auburn University. He is a REAL LEADER who will never let MAGA/KAG, or our Country, down! Tommy will protect your Second Amendment (which is under siege), is strong on Crime and the Border, and truly LOVES our Military and our Vets. He will be a great Senator for the people of Alabama. Coach Tommy Tuberville, a winner, has my Complete and Total Endorsement. I love Alabama!,” Trump wrote.

But Sessions also had a pointed message for the president in a follow-up tweet.

“We are Alabama. Nobody tells us how to vote or what to do,” he wrote.

Trump has called naming Sessions as attorney general “the biggest mistake” of his presidency.

The runoff had been scheduled for the end of March but was postponed to July because of the coronavirus pandemic.
