Watch live: VP debate between Mike Pence, Kamala Harris kicks off
The lone vice presidential debate of the 2020 election cycle is underway in Salt Lake City, Utah, pitting incumbent Mike Pence against Democratic challenger and California Sen. Kamala Harris.
The candidates are going toe-to-toe at the University of Utah — metaphorically speaking, with strict new coronavirus precautions in place following President Trump’s diagnosis with the disease last week.
In addition to maintaining a social distance, the participants are separated by plexiglas barriers, even though some experts have questioned their efficacy in slowing the virus.
Aides to Pence indicated before the debate that the vice president would cast his opponent as “hypocritical” and inconsistent — down to her previous criticism of her running mate, former Vice President Joe Biden.
Harris, meanwhile, will likely look to draw blood on the Trump administration’s handling of the pandemic, in the first debate since the president became one of the more than 7.5 million Americans to contract the disease.
The undercard contest, however, is all but certain to be more tame than last week’s raucous tilt between Trump and Biden, the first of three debate-stage meetings between the presidential candidates.
