Sinead O'Connor revealed Nothing Compares 2 U tears were for her mum

Sinead O’Connor revealed her iconic Nothing Compares 2 U tears were for her ‘abusive and torturous’ late mum who she ‘never stopped crying over’ ahead of the star’s tragic aged 56

Sinead O’Connor revealed her iconic tears in the 1990 video for her song Nothing Compares 2 U were for her ‘abusive’ mother Marie.

On Wednesday, the legendary singer’s family announced she had passed away aged 56 leading to an outpouring of grief all around the world.

In her video for the heartbreaking track, a Prince cover, she was seen in a close-up shot staring at the camera, during which tears ran down her face.

Marie died aged 45 when she lost control of her car on an icy road and crashed into a bus, when Sinead was 18, after which the star spoke at length about the pain she suffered at the hands of her mother while growing up.

Speaking about the crying scene, she said: ‘I didn’t know I was going to cry when I sang in the video because I didn’t cry in the studio recording it. I think it happened because there was a big eye on me (camera) recording me.

‘Every time I sing that song I think of my mother. I never stop crying for my mother. I couldn’t face being in Ireland for 13 years because of it.

‘I cut myself off. I never called home and it took me 25 years to stop crying. I was thinking of her my subconscious was also thinking of that little girl out in the garden…

‘I think it’s funny that the whole world fell in love with me because of that crying in the video. I then went and did lots of crying and everyone said ‘you crazy bitch’ but they fell in love with that tear because it was a mirror on themselves.’

In 2017, Sinead spoke on Dr Phil about her fraught relationship with Marie, who she claimed ran a ‘torture chamber’ and delighted in hurting her.

She said: ‘I am fed up of being defined as the crazy person or the child abuse survivor… She (her mother) ran a torture chamber. She was a person who took delight in hurting you.’

When asked what she loved about her mum, Sinead replies: ‘That she’s dead.’

The late star’s death, which came after her son Shane’s suicide last year, sparked an outpouring of grief in her native Ireland and around the world.

Last week, she hailed Shane as the ‘love of her life’ and the ‘only person who ever loved me unconditionally’, adding that she felt ‘lost’ without him.

Ms O’Connor has apparently struggled with mental health issues since her son Shane, 17, took his own life in January 2022 after escaping hospital while on suicide watch. She posted this photo with her son last week

In what appears to be her final video, Ms O’Connor told her Twitter followers: ‘I didn’t want to make a video. But you know, the way your kid unfortunately passing away – it isn’t good for one’s body. Or soul to be fair’

The mother-of-four also posted a series of Spotify links to relatively sad and heart breaking songs, including one she dedicated to ‘all mothers of Suicided children’.

After releasing a statement about her death, her loved ones have requested privacy and did not disclose a cause of death.

Replying to a tweet asking people to describe their life using emojis, Sinead posted a slew of crying emojis alongside a photo of her and Shane.

Reiterating how she lost her 17-year-old to suicide, Sinead penned on July 17: ‘Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul.

‘We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally.

‘I am lost in the bardo without him.’ Bardo is a Buddhist term for a state of existence between death and rebirth, similar to purgatory.

Sinead launched a new Twitter account earlier this month, telling her followers: ‘Hello my twitter family. Please find here below my new twitter account. Looking forward. Sinead.’

In a statement, the musician’s family said: ‘It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad’. Ms O’Connor is pictured in February 2020

The singer (pictured in 1990) was known to have had years of mental health battles before her death was reported last night

It came after she had seemingly limited her use of the platform, having posted to her @SineadOConnor profile only a few times this year.

She appeared to be quite active on her new account, @7860mShahid, writing several tweets about the healing process.

Her first post on the account read: ‘Never forget who helped you in a difficult time.’ She also responded to a user who asked: ‘Can we talk about how healing makes you become uninterested in like everyone and everything.’

‘Only while you’re healing … once you’re healed it’s a whole different kettle of horses,’ Ms O’Connor answered back.

On July 8 she also gave her followers a life update, telling them she had moved back to London after ’23 years absence’ and said she was ‘very happy to be home’.
